Inconspicuously located on the square Dvorni Trg in Ljubljana is the building of the Slovenian Philharmonic, now society, formerly academy of music, whose roots go back to 1701. It is thus one of the oldest academies of music in Europe and has an illustrious history. Ludwig van Beethoven was an honorary member; Franz Schubert applied for the post of director; Gustav Mahler conducted over 60 different operas there in one season. In more recent times Carlos Kleiber conducted the Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra and in the foyer of the hall, letters and other memorabilia from these special occasions are on display. The hall is still used for chamber concerts and recitals. (Reporter: Elizabeth Mortimer)
